Elsie Dubugras takes documentary to English TV

Great painters of the past renew their work through a medium

In the dark, using both hands, Luiz Antônio Gasparetto receives numerous paintings by Renoir, Picasso, Modigliani, Tarsila do Amaral, and many others.  But some of these paintings come upside down…

(Text by Marlene Rossi Severino Nobre.)

We had just attended a unique “vernissage”…  Various paintings in different styles, signed by well-known names in the global art scene: Modigliani, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Degas, Manet, Picasso, Tarsila do Amaral, Van Gogh, and others, parading dazzlingly, with well-defined strokes, in either soft or vibrant colors.

But the “author,” or rather, the co-author, is a young Brazilian, Luiz Antônio Gasparetto, introduced for the first time to the press in November last year, Issue No. 8 of this paper.  On that occasion, our dear colleague Elsie Dubugras wrote about Gasparetto, who is simply the intermediary, the medium, for famous painters to express their art.  This phenomenon is known as psychopictography.

Ms. Dubrugas’ article generated an enormous impact, the reason why we are addressing the subject again.  This time we are able to interview her and obtain further clarifications, as she will soon take this mediumistic work to Europe and the United States.  We had just finished taping a session of Gasparetto’s work: 10 paintings were created in 45 minutes, with the last one being a double composition.

The Brazilian Institute for Psychobiophysical Research (IBPP), founded by Hernani Guimarães de Andrade in 1963, has been coordinating research on the subject since July 1974.  According to their calculations, the average time to create each painting was four and a half minutes, with the minimum being one and a half minutes, and the maximum seven and a half minutes for the most elaborate drawing.

Most paintings were done with the right hand, while the left hand remained over the eyes, which were always closed.  Renoir always signs with the left hand and upside down.  The IBPP has already gathered 144 photographs on Gasparetto’s work, many taken at intervals of 30 seconds or less.  In many cases, it was impossible to follow the sequence due to the sheer speed of the movements.  In the dark, the phenomena occur even faster.

Excited, we were able to gather the medium and tireless Elsie to bring you important aspects of this magnificent work.  And for us, as Brazilians, it is very gratifying to be the first to see these paintings by famous artists before people in Europe…

Europe and the United States

FE – Elsie, we know you are about to embark on another trip to promote Spiritism in Europe. What will this mission be like this time?

Elsie – Well, we are heading out with a very intense schedule.  ITV [Independent Television], in London, is interested in seeing films showing the painters working through Gasparetto.  But we are not only launching the films – we will also give some lectures with slides, in addition to press coverage, probably for the Psychic Researcher and Psychic News newspapers in London.

FE – You also mentioned extending your trip to the United States?

Elsie – Yes, Mrs. Bessie Robinson, from New York, is interested in a series of lectures.  From this trip on we will be able to plan better because, in addition to introducing psychopictography, we will give several talks about Spiritism in Brazil.  We are also considering including California in our itinerary.  We have received a request from the California Parapsychology Foundation through Ms. Kay Sterner.  We will see what we can arrange.

We share your enthusiasm, Elsie, and we hope that the paths for this magnificent work continue to open ever wider for you.

FE – Gasparetto, what have the Spirits said about this work now reaching Europe and the United States?

Gasparetto – They say all of this is part of a grand plan they are conducting through different mediums: Rosemary Brown in the field of music, Chico Xavier in literature, and also us, in a very small way, in the field of painting.

Modigliani is very active, imaginative, gentle, and kind.  Van Gogh is extremely patient and methodical.  Toulouse-Lautrec, on the other hand, shows a certain cynicism regarding human weaknesses – he is very cheerful, but also temperamental when working.  Renoir and Degas are enlightened, gentle, and austere Spirits.  Tarsila do Amaral is kind, affable, and very patient.  But Picasso is moody and often rude in the way he speaks.

Once, Picasso was present while an artist was showing some slides of his own work; the artist wanted to know Picasso’s opinion about his paintings.  At that moment, the deceased painter made a negative gesture, turned up his nose and walked away…  Of course, I didn’t say anything to the artist.  But that’s just how he is – he says I have “horse hands” and criticizes me.  Quite interesting…

FE – Do you always feel the presence of the Spirits?

Gasparetto – They accompany me to the Art Museum, explain their work to me – especially their contact with nature, the balance of contrasts between light and shadow – but they do not interfere in my personal life.  They remain absent for extended periods of time to continue producing in the spiritual world.

The paintings are already pre-drawn

FE – How do they execute the paintings through you?

Gasparetto – My hands move without any interference on my part, even though I remain conscious.  They take a blank sheet of paper, place on it the paintings they have already created in the spiritual world and reproduce them through me.  That’s why it doesn’t matter where they start – the painting has already been finished, already developed.

Awakening consciousness to spirituality

The Spirits’ goal is to reach Europe, as Europeans, culturally, place a great emphasis on art and on the phenomenon itself.  That is why the paintings executed through my mediumship are more connected to European realities.  We now have some Brazilian themes because some of Brazilian painters, like our Tarsila do Amaral, have recently appeared.  But in general, the painters continue with the same themes, mostly from France.  I feel they want to awaken the consciousness of those who already have eyes to see the reality of the spiritual world.

Picasso: Stubborn

Lautrec: Cynical

FE – Gasparetto, I heard that, after so many years of contact with these painters, you have produced nearly 7,000 paintings.  What can you say about the psychological characteristics of some of them?

Gasparetto – The way they create the paintings vary greatly: upside down, with the right hand, with both hands in a normal position, or sometimes with one hand upside down and the other in a normal position.

FE – Have you ever studied painting?

Gasparetto – No, I am studying Psychology at São Marcos University.  I only took three months of oil painting lessons in 1973.  At that time, I thought I could become a great painter and tried to work without the Spirits, but I couldn’t make a single stroke.  If they hadn’t returned, I would not have been able to paint at all.

Here is young Luiz Antônio Gasparetto, who started this work at the age of 13 and has already received about 7,000 paintings from famous deceased painters.

Stay strong, young man – your work is an excellent inspiration to youth.
